Learn from the Dolphins

Learn from the Dolphins

One of the biggest similarities dolphins and humans share is their social structure. They are highly social mammals with complex communication systems like we do. It is also how Island Learn first began with the name Dolphin Haus. Besides the ocean aspect, we strives to create a sustainably collaborative society.

In the summer 2018, Dolphin Haus (Island Learn) worked with Surf Life Saving Australia and Wakasa Wada Surf Life Saving Club to develop a first Nipper Experience Program in Japan.  Lifesaving Nippers are children participating in a surf life saving program, typically between 5-4, who are learning surf and water safety skills through fun and games. They are taught skills like identifying beach hazards, basic first aid, and teamwork, though the primary focus is on surf education rather than active beach patrols like senior members.

It was a truly international experience for both the instructors and participants. The coordinating and instructing members come from Canada, the US, Australia and Japan. During this thoughtfully designed program with games and trainings, our nippers were introduced and practiced to the basics of surf safety an immersive environment in English.

The one-day event were held twice at the beautiful Wakasa Wada Beach facing the Sea of Japan. Around 80 km away northward from the Kyoto city, the magnificently secluded location provide an impeccable experience of pristine water, unforgettable scenery and local beach culture.  Since 2016, the beach has also been recognized by Blue Flag, a prestigious international award for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators that meet high standards in environmental management, safety, and water quality.
