Design Your Student Life
Share
At Island Learn, we're excited to share insights from our Design Your Student Life (DYSL) pilot workshop, a groundbreaking initiative developed in collaboration with Aberdeen Kaifong Welfare Association. This workshop brings the renowned design thinking methodology from Stanford Design School to Hong Kong secondary school students, addressing the unique pressures they face today.
What is Design Your Student Life?
Design Your Student Life is an innovative workshop programme grounded in design thinking principles developed by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans from Stanford Design School. Rather than treating life challenges as problems to be solved in isolation, DYSL encourages students to approach their lives with the same creative, iterative mindset that designers use to solve complex problems.
The workshop guides participants through a structured process of self-discovery, exploration, and intentional life design—helping them build lives filled with meaning and purpose.
Why Hong Kong Students Need This
Hong Kong secondary school students face unprecedented pressure. Between academic demands, family expectations, social media influence, and uncertainty about the future, many struggle with stress, anxiety, and feelings of being overwhelmed. These pressures can take a serious toll on mental health and wellbeing.
DYSL addresses these challenges head-on by helping students:
- Develop deeper self-understanding and self-awareness
- Conduct honest self-assessment of their values, strengths, and interests
- Clarify their self-value beyond grades and external validation
- Explore multiple life options and possibilities
- Build a life with meaning and purpose
- Develop resilience and mental health awareness
Our Pilot Workshop Journey
In March 2026, we launched our first pilot DYSL workshop with secondary school participants, partnering with Aberdeen Kaifong Welfare Association to reach students in the community. The response was encouraging, and we're currently refining the workshop design based on participant feedback and insights.
Our next workshop is scheduled for April 2026, with continued development to ensure the programme is culturally relevant and deeply meaningful for Hong Kong students.
The Design Thinking Approach
Rather than prescribing a single "right" path, DYSL teaches students to:
- Reflect on who they are and what matters to them
- Explore different possibilities without judgment
- Prototype small experiments to test ideas about their future
- Iterate and adjust based on what they learn
This approach empowers students to take active ownership of their lives rather than feeling trapped by circumstances or expectations.
Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
At its core, DYSL is a mental health initiative. By helping students build lives aligned with their values, develop self-compassion, and find meaning, the workshop contributes to suicide prevention and improved overall wellbeing. When young people feel understood, purposeful, and connected to their own values, they're better equipped to navigate life's challenges.
